In 1925 front and back bumpers on cars were considered standard equipment. Those first bumpers were installed in a fairly simple manner. Basic attachment placed the bumpers onto the cars via pre existing metal beams. Modern technology has dramatically changed the look and assembly of car bumpers today.

Originally, the bumper served a purpose of protecting the vehicle from impact. Today, that function has been altered to include protection for the driver as well. In addition the new plastic bumpers on the market now are aesthetically pleasing to designers and drivers as well.

Plastic car bumpers are created from thermoplastic olefins (TPO’s), polycarbonates, polyesters, polypropylene, polyurethanes, polyamides or a blend of each of these materials. Added to the mixture are glass fibers. This mixture gives the bumpers strength and structural rigidness.

Through this creation mixture, designers are afforded the luxury of having an open canvas to work with in terms of plastic bumper design. Plastic maintains a high level of flexibility to it allowing for shaping and structural templates. These bumpers can easily be assembled for a new vehicle or efficiently make improvements to an existing vehicle.

Outside of the aesthetic appeal of plastic bumpers, there is a certain safety element factored into the design. Plastic allows for an impact-resistant setting through the various reinforcements placed into the design. Like their metal counterparts, plastic bumpers expand and contract within a short time frame as the vehicle moves down the road. No additional materials are needed to hold a plastic bumper into place once it is adhered to the vehicle.

A growing trend in plastic car bumpers is for a majority of the material to be recyclable. By doing so, manufacturers can utilize left over pieces from a series of bumpers for the creation of an entirely new plastic bumper. This is a cost effective production aspect of bumper development.

Going one step further, plastics found in salvage yards and landfills can be broken down by scraping off paint and reworked into the production of a new plastic bumper. These 100% recycled bumpers function with the same safety and production of brand new plastic bumpers.

Given that plastic is easily worked with, cracked plastic car bumper repair is a relatively inexpensive process. Many auto body shops can repair the cracked bumper without having to remove it from the car body. Cars are sprayed with an epoxy material mainly in the section of the bumper that contains the crack. The crack is then repaired and the section is painted to match the color of the rest of the car. Average cracked plastic car bumper repairs can be done in a short period of two to three hours. Costs for the repair depend on the severity of the crack in the bumper.

Nothing can stop the heartbeat of a vehicle owner faster than seeing scuffs on a beautiful set of alloy wheels. It can come from some random stranger getting a little too close to a car. It can come from a wild shopping cart on the loose in the parking lot. Whatever the reason, it is not a pleasant sight for any vehicle owner.

Minor scuffs can be repaired in a do-it-yourself manner for an inexpensive cost. In the event significant alloy wheel scuffs are present, it is advisable to take it to the auto body shop.

Alloy wheel scuff repair can be completed in a personal driveway by any car repair enthusiast. There are just a few items needed to get started: silver wheel lacquer; high gloss clear lacquer; primer; spot putty; sand papers in 240-grit and 400-grit; paint thinner; masking tape and masking paper.

Start by thoroughly cleaning the wheel surface to remove any substances that may be present. The cleaner the wheel surface, the easier it will be to repair any scuff marks. Make every effort to only clean the damaged area. Once the scuff marks have been repaired, there will be plenty of time to clean the rest of the wheel surface.

Once the wheel surface is clean, take the masking tape and mark off the scuffed area. Take the tape back behind the wheel rim. Utilizing the 240-grit sand paper, sand the damaged area and apply the spot putty. Do not sand past the marked off taped area. After applying a base level of putty, switch to the 400-grit sand paper. Attach the paper to a wood block for a smoother finish.

Protect the remaining portion of the alloy wheel and car with a sheet or drop cloth. Apply scratch filler primer to the wheel and sand it before adding spot putty to the area. Spray primer to the wheel and wipe off any excess that falls on the spokes or other sections of the wheel. Once the primer is dry, sand it gently with 400-grit or 600-grit sand paper.

Utilize the silver wheel lacquer in a fine base coat layer on the alloy wheel. Spray in a sweeping motion across the damaged area. The ideal drying time for the silver lacquer is over night. If this is not possible, place the car in direct sunlight to speed the drying process. Once this has dried thoroughly, apply the clear lacquer coat to give the alloy wheel a shiny appearance. Proper application is two thin coats with 30 minute dry times between each coat.

Now that the lacquer has dried completely, restore shine to the alloy wheels. This is done with a finishing polish and 1500-grit or 2000-grit wet/dry compound and a buffer rag. In no time flat, the scuff will be gone and an alloy wheel will be returned to a shiny appearance once again.

The ideal setting to complete this do-it-yourself repair is on a warm, sunny day. The warm weather and sunshine will aide in the drying process between lacquer coats.

Repairing Alloy Wheels

It is not hard to put a scratch on a set of alloy wheel rims. Simply bumping into the curb as you are rounding the corner is enough to scratch up the aluminum.

Sports racing enthusiasts are likely to go running into the streets at the sight of a scratched alloy wheel rim. The first instinct is to strip the car of its imperfection and replace it with a nice, new shiny alloy wheel. This line of thinking falls into the use-it, toss-it mentality. For those that can afford to do this, that is a great option. For the average driver, replacing alloy wheels is not an option.

This material acts as a strengthening agent as well. In some cases, the epoxy material can create a stronger rebuilt wheel rim than the stock rim originally on the car.

A small welder is then utilized to blend the epoxy material on the wheel surface. The welder runs around the entire circumference on the outer lip of the wheel. Once applied, the entire wheel is reconditioned to a virtually new appearance.

The final step is restored the alloy wheel to its original mint condition. Buffed, shined and ready for action, the newly repaired alloy wheel is balanced and ready to hit the road.

The majority of cracked, bent or worn alloy wheels can be repaired. Cracks impose the greatest damage potential to alloy wheels. Left untreated, cracks cause major damage to the entire rim structure. Damage to spoke areas, lug areas or the inner lip rim is irreparable.

When in doubt, take the vehicle to a local auto body shop for a second opinion.
